ABOUT THE FOUNDER: Jason Allen has fulfilled his father’s lifelong dream of having his own wood shop and business.  In a small shop in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, Jason is finding his dreams coming true, as well.

Written by: Connie Ratisseau - CarveWright Marketing Department

Of his CarveWright machine Jason says, “Without this little machine, my life would not be the way it is now and it is pretty good!”

I had the pleasure of meeting Jason Allen at my first Woodworking Show in St. Louis (Collinsville).  What struck me most was his enthusiasm and energy.  His passion for what he was doing and excitement for the world of CNC was infectious not just to me, but for everyone fortunate enough to speak with him as they came into our booth that weekend.  The record number of machines we sold that weekend has not been broken.

I thrive on reactions…I always get a WOW.  And that WOW is what keeps me working towards perfection.

Researching Jason’s website www.littleredwoodshop.com, I was profoundly struck again by his character that shines through his website.   I was reminded of the Girl Scout Promise that I took years ago.  “On my honor, I will try: to serve God, my country and to help people at all times…”  That is Jason Allen.

On Spirituality, Jason professes, “I am not a Sunday Christian.  I am, however, a believer…(that realizes)…when I stop being selfish and start listening to what God is telling me.  I get rewarded.”  His rewards are abounding by his company that is finally flourishing and he attributes some of that success to his CarveWright.  “Without this little machine, my life would not be the way it is now and it is good!”

Jason purchased his first Hobbyist CNC machine about 4 years ago.  “I researched the machine for a year (before purchasing) and I wish I hadn’t lost that time.”  Jason is currently looking for a home for his multiple CNCs, a retail space that he will call the Carved Sign factory (more on that later).  Since his father’s death seven years ago this past May, Jason has been busy realizing his father’s dream to have his own wood shop.  Left with his tools and a lifelong exposure to woodworking and metal machining, he built The LittleRedWoodshop in Illinois and has used its success as a launching point.

Jason claims to have “inherited his (fathers) tools, but not his talent.”  One look at his work and it is obvious Jason has found his talent.  Jason creates beautiful lithopanes (Greek word meaning “light in stone”) from Corian.  His “Jesus Wept” and “Whole World in His Hands” Lithopanes cannot be appreciated in a photograph as they are in person with the light shining from behind his carvings.  Jason considers himself to still be practicing.

The Story of Marine CPL. Jason L. Dunham

Corporal Jason L. Dunham was born on 10 November 1981 in Scio, New York. The date may seem insignificant to those who don't know its history. The ones who do know its significance celebrate this day - faithfully - each year. November 10th is the United States Marine Corps birthday... a birthday that Jason Dunham shares.

Corporal Jason L. Dunham was 22 years old when he left us. He came from the small town of Scio, NY population 1900. Its the kind of town where everyone knows your name... where values & respect still mean something. It was here, along a winding country road filled with rolling-meadows, & a swift moving creek, that Jason L. Dunham was brought into this world.

As you turn into the Dunhams long driveway that leads to their house, the breeze catches a yellow ribbon tied to the mailbox and the story begins to unfold. The further you drive; two flags adorn the front porch, an American flag and the United States Marine Corps flag. Both seem to play the same quiet song, and yet stand tall for this fallen young man. There is a final reminder that Jason Dunham is no longer with us a blue star in the front window has been replaced by a gold star, symbolizing the Dunham family loss. READ MORE
Jason is not just a CarveWright user; he was the leader in forming the CNC Art Guild (www.CncArtGuild.com); an idea that began on the CarveWright User’s Forum and within weeks became a reality.  The CNC Art Guild currently has 500+ members all over the United States and in multiple countries, of individuals that have an interest in sharing ideas and information with fellow CNC Artists and Users. “That’s the beauty of it (CarveWright).  Regular Joe’s like me from a variety of backgrounds can use it.”   Of the CNC Art Industry, Jason states, “it is a totally new industry waiting to blossom and explode.”

At his shop, Jason also creates signs many of which have a military theme.  An ex-member of the US Army Medical Corps and coming from a long line of military family members, Jason’s patriotism is evident from his website.  After seeing one of his military signs, Jason was asked to participate in a memorial to fallen war hero and Medal of Honor recipient, Cpl. Jason L. Dunham.  Read more about the Cpl. Jason L. Dunham at memorial BELOW.

UPDATE: Recently Jason has been working hard to realize another dream and would like to introduce the Pattern Super Store (www.PatternSuperStore.com).  He has dabbled in the production of digital media for the last couple of years and is now making patterns available online. Currently, there is a total of seven artists (come join the team) contributing to “The Store” with very different backgrounds and styles.

“The Pattern Super Store is a CNC Artist Cooperative that was born out of a desire to provide quality patterns to our friends and follow CNC carvers ... we are trying to provide a more diverse collection of artwork, we are artists that specialize in specific areas ...” says Allen.  “What does this mean for you, higher quality, more carvable and much cleaner patterns that have an art flare. Our digital media is available in (but not limited to) PTN or MPC (CarveWright), DXFs and STLs.”

Jason is also very proud to announce the addition of VectorClip3D to the growing list of contributing artists, “We started by adding the Annual Subscription and we are very close to launching the VectorClip3D DVD Pattern Collections … this is Awesome.”

Look for many great things to come from Jason, The LittleRedWoodshop, The Gift Mill & The Sign Mill (coming spring 2012), The Pattern Super Store & all of his follow CNC Artists. "We are also very proud to be expanding our knowledge and our product line, with the addition of products from Laguna Tools and ArtClip3D we are confident that we are in a position to be able to offer or friends and customers great CNC Art Production capabilities well into the future." says Jason “I challenge you to create something; anything really … there is no better feeling.”

Unveiling Ceremony Includes Memorial, Concert and Presentation of Colors

written by: Connie Ratisseau

Just a few days before the nation celebrated the 4th of July; friends, family and people who had never even met Medal of Honor Recipient Corporal Jason L. Dunham, gathered to permanently memorialize his life and sacrifice in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania at the dedication of the Jason L. Dunham Memorial. The dedication was made honoring his selfless act as he gave his own life on April 14, 2004 to save his fellow comrades in Iraq.

The full day of events began in Ridgeway at the First Presbyterian Church as four members of the US Marine Color Guard walked slowly down the aisle of the church to make a presentation of the American Flag to Deb and Dan Dunham, parents of Corporal Dunham. Also in attendance was Jasons sister Katie and grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Kincaid of Ridgeway.

After the moving story of Corporal Dunhams heroism was relayed by his commanding officer Major Trent Gibson, the ceremonies moved to Ridgeways VFW Post 5887 where the official unveiling, placement and dedication of the memorial was presented by Mr. Jason Allen of Topeka, Illinois.

Woodworker and CNC artist, Mr. Allen, who never personally met Corporal Dunham, was also the designer and creator of the cherry cabinet memorial that features two Lithophane photographs of Corporal Dunham, carved in acrylic and backlit to reveal its beauty.

The cabinet also features a glass enclosed area which houses a scale model designed by Mr. David Carter of North Little Rock, Arkansas of the soon to be commissioned US Navy guided-missile destroyer, USS Jason Dunham-DDG109..

The display also included a framed United States Flag transported by the 169th Air Squadron (Peoria Air Guard) to the battlefield in Iraq and returned to the Dunham Family in honor of Corporal Dunham.

Later that evening, a Benefit Concert was held featuring renowned gospel artist Mrs. Cathy Reynolds of Morton, Illinois. During the concert which included both gospel and patriotic music, Mrs. Reynolds was joined by the Lee County Concert Choir. Concert promoters received more than $1,200 in donations for the Cpl. Jason L. Dunham Memorial Scholarship.

About Corporal Jason L. Dunham: On April 14, 2004, 22 year old, Corporal Dunham from Scio, NY selflessly gave his own life to protect the lives of the members of his squadron by placing his helmet over a dropped live grenade and then covering it with his own body. The other two Marines survived the explosion with serious injuries, but Corporal Dunham died eight days later at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He has since received from President George W. Bush the nations highest military award, the Medal of Honor presented in January 2007. The US Navy in an unprecedented short period of time after his death named the newest guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham in March 2007. The destroyer is under construction and is expected to be delivered to the US Navy by fall of 2009. More information about Corporal Dunham can be found at www.jasonsmemorial.com.
